Staying a step ahead of strangles was the latest subject in our ever-popular series of veterinary seminars, and the evening was packed with the latest information and practical advice from Redwings’ vet and nationally recognised strangles expert Nic de Brauwere.
Seats were filled with horse owners and yard managers from across Norfolk, all keen to find out more about how to protect their horses and businesses from the misery associated with the UK’s most common equine infectious disease.
And attendees were not disappointed. Always an entertaining speaker, Nic covered all aspects of this complex illness in an accessible and practical way. Explaining how strangles progresses, one of the evening’s top take-home messages was the importance of monitoring a horse’s temperature to help spot infection at the earliest opportunity.
Nic also unpicked some of the myths and misunderstandings surrounding strangles carriers – horses who have recovered from the illness, but retain hidden bacteria that are a common and invisible source of strangles outbreaks
Attendees were then invited to think about what steps they or their yard already take to reduce the risk of infectious disease already, and how they would like to use their newly acquired wealth of information and ideas to help them improve their level of protection in the future!
Our audience were also the first lucky recipients of the second edition of Redwings’ Strangles: Speak Out information pack, hot off the press a few days ahead of its official launch! The new pack is a comprehensive, practical and user-friendly guide containing everything horse owners or yard managers need to know about preventing and managing the disease.
Reviewed by top industry experts, including Dr Andrew Waller of the Animal Health Trust and Professor Josh Slater from the Royal Veterinary College, the pack is also endorsed by the British Equine Veterinary Association and the British Horse Society.
“…very impressive: clear, succinct and accessible… just the right kind of practical information for horse owners.” Professor Josh Slater, Royal Veterinary College
