Budding artists are invited to donate pieces of artwork for a special sale that will raise funds towards caring for our surviving Amersham horses, ponies and donkeys in commemoration of the 10th anniversary of the notorious rescue.
Paintings, sketches, photographs, textiles and even sculptures - original or pre-loved - are being gratefully received for the art sale, which will take place from Friday 25th May at Redwings Aylsham in Norfolk.
In particular, we're keen for talented supporters to donate artwork inspired by our Amersham survivors. Ten years ago, in January 2008, we helped to rescue almost 100 severely neglected horses, ponies and donkeys from atrocious conditions discovered at Spindle Farm, Amersham, in Buckinghamshire. The animals were found in varying states of emaciation with no food, water or basic vet care.
We would end up offering a safe forever home to 60 horses and donkeys from Spindle Farm, as well as six foals born to rescued mares. Despite their terrible start in life, an incredible 58 Amersham survivors remain in Redwings’ care 10 years on – either within the Sanctuary or in loving Guardian homes.
Money raised from the art sale will go towards our Amersham 10 Fund to help care for the survivors for the next 10 years.
Generous artists have already donated some beautiful pieces of original art inspired by their favourite Amersham survivors, including paintings and sketches of stunning Gelderlander horse Zippy, spotty appaloosa pony Cookie, little donkey Esther and adorable grey pony Hersheys.
The art sale will also include an eclectic collection of framed works depicting traditional countryside scenes, animals, modern colourful pieces and famous landmarks. Prices range from £3 to £60 so there is something to suit every budget.
Anne Galloway, Gifts in Kind Manager, said: “We’re delighted to be bringing back our annual art sale with a very special theme. Earlier this year we put out a call to all budding artists asking if they would create artwork inspired by our amazing Amersham survivors to celebrate the happy lives they now enjoy at the Sanctuary and we’ve been thrilled with the response!
“I hope as many people as possible will be able to come along and support this year’s art sale as every penny raised really will help us ensure we can give these gorgeous survivors the love and care they deserve for the next 10 years.”
If you’re an artist or if you have any pre-loved artwork tucked away, we're welcoming donations for the art sale up until Monday 14th May. For more information and to donate an item, please contact Anne Galloway by calling 01508 481070 or emailing agalloway@redwings.co.uk.
The art sale will take place from Friday 25th May to Monday 2nd July at Redwings Aylsham, Spa Lane, Aylsham Norfolk, NR11 6UE. The visitor centre is open every Friday, Saturday, Sunday and Monday 10am to 4pm (closed on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays), and entry is free.
For those who are unable to attend the art sale or contribute a piece of art but would still like to donate towards the ongoing care of the Amersham survivors, simply see below.
