Redwings is happy to announce the winners and runners up of our Black Beauty competition, inspired by us taking on Anna Sewell House.
We asked budding artists and poets to create masterpieces on the question 'What does Black Beauty mean to you?'.
Redwings have recently become the custodian of the birthplace of the Black Beauty author in Great Yarmouth, which will be opening to the public later this month.
Gemma Walpole, Executive Director for Income and Engagement, said: “Since we announced the news of our residency in Anna Sewell House, our supporters have been in touch in their droves to tell us their special memories of the novel, and how it has impacted them, and it’s been wonderful to see the beautiful pieces of art and poetry this competition has inspired.
“Thank you so much to everyone who entered. All of the amazing artworks will be displayed in Anna Sewell House after opening for our visitors to enjoy! We’ll be releasing more information about that very soon, so please keep checking our website!”
First place in the ‘Over 18s’ category goes to Emma Jagger and her wonderful sketch 'Black Beauty and Ginger'. Sarah Hawkins is awarded Runner Up for her painting which included pages from the Black Beauty novel. The judge in this category was so bowled over by the entrants he decided to award an additional 'Best Poem' prize, which goes to Lois Harrison.
First place in the ‘Under 18s’ category goes to Emily Rysdale and her piece 'Galloping Wild and Free' and the Runner Up goes to Imogen and Doris with 'It will be a dream to have a horse!'
Anna Sewell House is located on Church Plain in Great Yarmouth. The house dates back to the 16th or 17th Century and was the birthplace of Anna in 1820. The building is owned by a supporter of the charity and horse owner, who approached Redwings about occupying the property and continuing Black Beauty’s impact on horse welfare.
We will be using the property to showcase the legacy of Anna Sewell and her famous novel, which has sold over 50 million copies worldwide, as well as the ongoing work of Redwings to help horses in need today.
Fans of the novel looking for other ways to get involved in this new phase of Anna Sewell House can also help Redwings by becoming Volunteer Guides in the building, welcoming visitors and sharing information about Black Beauty, as well as the work of the charity. If you can offer some of your precious time for this special project, please email volunteering@redwings.co.uk.
