I moved to Norfolk from Ireland in 2014 to work at Redwings and have never looked back! I’ve always wanted to work in welfare and it’s just as rewarding as I hoped.
Across our Norfolk sites, the Nights team check every resident at least twice between 5pm and 5am – that’s a total of nearly 1200 horses every night! We make sure everyone is safe and secure, and check for any wounds or signs of illness such as colic. Luckily there is always a Redwings vet on call and life-saving surgeries at 3am do happen!
As a Nights team member, I also give out extra feeds and medications for horses that need special care, particularly new rescues that are often in a bad way and need to be looked after around the clock. I love being able to help horses in need, and watching new arrivals recover and start to trust humans again is very special.
My Redwings resident soft spot: A beautiful Connemara pony called Silver came to Redwings from Ireland not long after I did! He was so nervous when he first arrived but now he is the friendliest pony you could meet and I’m sure to give him a cuddle every time I see him. He is blind in one eye but is very happy with a small herd of partially-sighted friends, aw!
