26 April 2023
Year of outbreak: 2011
Location: Suffolk
Horses infected: 17
Pony purchased. Two weeks in, swelling in face, called vet, I suspected strangles, was assured it wasn’t.
Went off to a show with other ponies, left girls home to bath the swollen face to try to get it to burst on vets say so. Home from 3 day show and called vet for second opinion. He said definitely strangles, tested confirmed positive, close down yard for 4 months. 17 horses/ponies infected. Three moved to 3 friends yards in isolation. Vets scoped all affected horses when over to confirm none became carriers free of charge. It took vets two days to scope all horses. None were carriers.
