Rescued pony in a "pickle" becomes a Star!

Redwings is celebrating the transformation of a rescued pony, whose severely injured eye had to be removed, by making her an ‘Adoption Star’.

Pickle, as she was named by us, was rescued in 2022 from a site in Norfolk, after a member of the public contacted our welfare team concerned about a young pony with an injured eye.

Our Senior Field Officer attended, and Pickle – who was just four or five months old at the time - was offered a home at the Sanctuary so the eye could be treated urgently. Due to the severity of the injury, our vets carried out surgery to remove her eye so it would no longer cause her any pain.

Piebald cob Pickle also required immediate treatment at our Horse Hospital for problems linked to a high parasitic worm burden.

Thanks to the work of our vets, Pickle went on to make a full recovery and she has grown into a friendly young mare and won the hearts of teams across the Sanctuary.

A new life

Her lovable nature has now seen her chosen to become the newest addition to our Adoption Scheme as an ‘Adoption Star’ – a rescued resident which supporters can sponsor to help fund their care and the work of Redwings, rescuing horses and donkeys across the UK.

Pickle now lives at Redwings Aylsham in North Norfolk where everyone can meet her and hear more about her remarkable recovery.

“Her story is a fantastic example of the lifesaving work that happens across Redwings, from the welfare team and horsebox drivers who rushed to help her, and the veterinary team who worked quickly to treat her eye and nurse her back to health.

Pickle is very friendly and loves a cuddle!

You can sponsor Pickle from just £2 per month. Her new adopters will receive an adoption pack, including a beautiful photo and certificate, as well as three postal updates throughout the year, alongside quarterly emails to keep her new friends updated on her life at Redwings.

Pickle will also have a birthday party at Redwings Aylsham every year, and her adopters will be invited to join the celebrations! This year, we're throwing Pickle a special launch party on Sunday 22nd October, from 12pm, and visitors are invited to come along and celebrate her new Star status!

Redwings Aylsham is free to visit and is currently open every Friday, Saturday, Sunday and Monday (10am-4pm).
