We say goodbye to our lovely Dayzee

We are so terribly sad to share the news that beloved Adoption Star, Shetland pony Dayzee, passed away suddenly on Wednesday 29th March. She was 12 years old.

That particular day, little Dayzee, who lived at Redwings Mountains in Scotland, became hesitant to walk and was clearly very uncomfortable. She was already on regular pain medication for osteoarthritis which she had developed as a result of poor conformation. After a thorough examination by the attending veterinary surgeon, extra pain relief was given and further medication prescribed in the hope of seeing an improvement.

Despite these efforts, her condition deteriorated and her care team were unable to encourage her to stand. After further examination the vets had no choice but to make the difficult but kind call and put poor Dayzee to sleep to ensure she didn’t suffer any further. The exact cause of her symptoms is not known.

As you can imagine, this was very unexpected, and the staff are all in shock as we know you will be too. Dayzee was a very special character and everyone is desperately sad to have lost her.

Dayzee was just a foal when she arrived at Redwings Mountains, after she spent two days travelling to the sanctuary from Norwich. She was born with a debilitating hip condition, which meant her hips easily dislocated, and her owners were worried they couldn’t provide the specialist care she would need. But with close monitoring and lots of TLC, Dayzee grew up into a happy and healthy pony, and joined our Adoption Scheme in 2018.
